Santa Fe Portalfest is hosted in O'ga P'Ogeh Owingeh, so-called Santa Fe, New Mexico, on the occupied ancestral homelands of Tewa and Keres speaking Indigenous peoples.

our values

Picture
Santa Fe Portalfest is excited to welcome folks of all ages, races, abilities, family structures, genders, and identities to gather in community. We commit to keeping Portalfest free to attendees. We strive to remove as many barriers to access as we can to ensure that everyone in our broader community is welcome at Portalfest.

Santa Fe Portalfest is hosted in O'ga P'ogeh on unceded Tewa and Keres land. We are committed to celebrating this land and landscape through a day of music and joy. We value the equitable distribution of resources and commit to paying a minimum 10% of our budget as land tax to a local Indigenous organization in the hopes of one day seeing this land rematriated.

Santa Fe Portalfest is organized by the community for the community. We are a do-it-yourself music festival that aims to share the labor of producing Portalfest, as well as sharing the magic of Portalfest.

Santa Fe Portalfest values all labor. We are currently seeking funding so we can compensate our performers. We also recognize that Portalfest is only possible through the volunteer labor of people in our community. It is still our priority to tangibly value their labor, so all volunteers will be provided with meals, t-shirts, and training.

Santa Fe Portalfest believes in building community capacity for collective care and safety. We know that safety is not derived from authority or coercion, and instead is accessed through shared values, decentralized power, trust-building, and transformative justice. We are committed to responding to harm or conflict that occurs at Portalfest with our on-site team of trained community de-escalators. The Santa Fe Police are not invited to Portalfest.

Santa Fe Portalfest prioritizes celebrating local talent. We center local musicians, vendors, and businesses who align with our values. We also strive to uplift the voices and ideas of Indigenous and multi-generational New Mexicans in the planning and production of this festival.

love notes to portalfest

“Portalfest is so special because it gives our community of musicians and artists a space to share their gifts within the community itself, within the spaces that are our homes, our neighborhood. This is radical in a sense because we are making the spaces we want to see, to be a part of, as a community. Portalfest is evidence of the power we hold we we come together and create the something we are looking for.”
- Flora
“Dear Portalfest, thanks for making me smile all day outside listening and grooving to so many Santa Fe gems! You brought art and community alive and I am so excited for what you will bring us in 2023.”
- Nina
“It was an absolute pleasure to volunteer at Portalfest last year! Portalfest is a rare opportunity to see many talented artists of New Mexico in such a fun, accessible way. I heard new bands and saw old faves - all while in the coziness of one of Santa Fe’s sweetest neighborhoods.”
- Madeline
“Santa Fe Portalfest is such a unique, fun, welcoming atmosphere brought into being with love and thoughtfulness. What a special way to feel more connected to the community and get to know such diverse and talented local artists!”
- Mori
“Dear Portalfest, my favorite moment with you was being held while listening to a song that spoke directly to my grief as the rain joined in the tears on my face. Maybe don’t bring the rain again this year, but I am so grateful for that memory.”
- Sam
“Santa Fe Portalfest was just a super awesome event. All the stage setups were super cute and the crowds were eager and full. I loved wandering around the neighborhood, following the cute map that the organizers designed, or just following where my ears led me. Lots of sweet acoustic music, as well as fun loud rock too! After all the sets, we had an awesome dance party with live DJs and cool artisan goods for sale. I seriously cannot wait for this year’s event. With all the work the organizers are putting in, I have no doubt it’s going to be on a whole ‘nother level!”

give us your money?

We are currently fundraising for Portalfest 2024! With a goal of $36,450, our fundraising priority is to pay our talent. Beyond that, we would love to pay our organizers a stipend for their time, pay a land tax to a local Indigenous organization, and cover the cost of supplies, rentals, and equipment for the festival. All donations are 100% tax deductible! We have a fiscal sponsorship with Queen Bee Music Association, a local community music school and non-profit organization.

portalfest beginnings

In 2022, a couple of friends came together and dreamed of bringing the east coast "porchfest" to New Mexico with a small gathering hosted on portales, driveways, and yards. A few months and many hours of volunteer labor later, we made it happen! In our first year with no funding, we were proud to host 27 bands across 5 stages, an art market with 6 vendors, and food trucks down Lopez Street.
